Take care of your home so that it fights the virus, not you.

Will cleanliness be a new trend?

Today's world is focused on the fight against a microscopic, but very strong opponent - the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus . The invisible and so dangerous enemy meant that we not only had to change our lifestyle, but also to rethink our habits and organization of the environment. Antibacterial agents have been added to our daily use. We equipped ourselves with toilet paper, rice and pasta. Then came the face masks and disposable gloves. What actions should be taken so that our home does not turn into a hospital, but remains a safe and comfortable haven?

Will the latest trend in interior design after 2020 be
"cleanliness" or "sterile minimalism" ?

How to protect your home against microorganisms?

A modern interior should not only look beautiful, but also facilitate everyday functioning of the household members. The need to maintain hygiene and safety will soon create new habits in us in using interior furnishings. Our brand has decided to isolate products that will facilitate these habits to implement. Furniture handles, hangers, door handles and even decorative elements can help us in these hard times for health. All you need is a conscious choice to make our surroundings more friendly to people, and to me, to viruses and microbes.

The NENA M handle is a classic furniture knob , made under the watchful eye of craftsmen in Poland.

There has been news around the world that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus stays on smooth surfaces - metals longer than on rough surfaces. It has also been proven to be easily "washable", which is why we are expected to have special hygiene measures. However, we have good news. Metal uneven metal. We invite you to read about surfaces that are not favorites of uninvited guests, invisible to the eye.

Furniture handles that viruses and bacteria don't like

Viruses, plagues and pandemics have always haunted humanity, but recent events are a special situation. The world was not prepared for a virus that has made its home in every country, in some of them with special power. Our decisions may have a positive or negative impact on our future. Is it therefore worth choosing consciously ? Let's wear masks, wear gloves, take care of hygiene and touch places that are not a threat to us.

An antimicrobial surface is one that contains an agent that inhibits the ability of microorganisms to grow on the surface of the material. Such surfaces are increasingly being tested for possible applications in a variety of conditions, including in clinics, industry, and even at home.

An innovation in antimicrobial surfaces is the discovery that copper and its alloys (brass, bronze, and others) are natural antimicrobial materials that have the specific properties of destroying a wide range of microorganisms.

How to get rid of viruses and bacteria from home

One of the tested metals that exhibits antimicrobial properties is well-known silver . Its use is documented and widely known. Another great coping with the killing of microorganisms on its surface with metal is copper . As humanity, we knew about it and used this feature in antiquity. Nowadays, after years of oblivion, we are trying to recreate our knowledge and explore even more. Copper antimicrobial mechanisms have been tested for decades and are still there because we can still learn a lot from it. We would like to present some of them as an important curiosity.

Recent clinical studies show that touch surfaces made of hygienic copper can reduce the risk of clinical infections by up to 58%. By using our raw copper handles, you guarantee yourself the best protection against unwanted microorganisms.

Copper and copper alloy surfaces are an effective means of preventing bacterial growth. In tests for checking the activity of viruses and bacteria (EPA) on said metal, among others, such microorganisms were taken into account: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli 0157: H7 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and others. The results show that for more than 355 copper alloys:

  • They constantly reduce bacterial contamination, achieving a 99.9% reduction within two hours of exposure;

  • Kill over 99.9% of bacteria within two hours of exposure;

  • They provide continuous antibacterial activity, while maintaining effectiveness in killing over 99.9% of bacteria in two hours;

  • They inhibit bacterial accumulation and growth within two hours of exposure between cleaning and disinfection stages.

In medical applications, EPA-approved antimicrobial copper products include handrails, handles, bedside tables, sinks, taps, door handles, toilet equipment, computer keyboards, and more.

Copper and brass are the best agents for killing microorganisms

The antimicrobial effectiveness of copper alloy touch surfaces has been confirmed in many studies. These surfaces have the specific properties of destroying a wide range of microorganisms.

In the interest of protecting public health, especially in medical environments , a number of tests have been conducted over the past 10 years regarding the effectiveness of copper of E. coli O157 by H7, methicillin, Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus, Clostridium difficile, influenza A virus, adenovirus and fungi. Stainless steel has also been studied because it is an important surface material in today's healthcare environments.

Recent studies have shown that copper alloy surfaces kill over 99.9% of microorganisms after just 1-2 hours. On stainless steel surfaces, microbes can last for weeks.

For the most part, the bacterial killing rate of copper alloys increases as the copper content of the alloy increases.

Brass , which has often been used to make door handles and handles in the past, also exhibits bactericidal effectiveness, but in a slightly longer time than pure copper. The brass samples tested were almost completely bactericidal (over 99.9% mortality) at 20 ° C for 60-270 minutes. Also at low temperatures (4 degrees) bactericidal activity in some alloys was almost complete.

The rate of complete microbial death on the four bronzes tested ranged from 50 to 270 minutes at 20 ° C and from 180 to 270 minutes at 4 ° C.

Copper and brass fight fungi

The antifungal efficacy of copper was compared with aluminum. For this purpose, organisms have been selected that can cause infections in humans: Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium chrysogenum, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. An increased extinction of fungal spores on copper surfaces was not found, for example, in aluminum. In the case of the Aspergillus niger mushroom, there was an increase in the number of spores on aluminum coupons, and growth on copper coupons, and it was around them that was inhibited.
