Bathroom Cabinet Handles: Which Shape for Which Front
The most common styles are elongated, attached with two screws along the front, and these go on the drawers under the sink. Right behind them are knobs with a single screw. Edge handles are placed on the top edge of the front, eliminating any protrusions in the narrow passageway next to the sink, which can be crucial in a small bathroom. There are also recessed models, which slide into a milled socket, and shell models. In a narrow bathroom, the passageway next to the sink, not the appearance of the front itself, determines the shape you choose. Are you looking for a specific shape throughout the store? Check out long furniture handles and edge handles.
Which handle finish will withstand steam and water? in the bathroom
Almost everything in this section has a lacquered finish, some are additionally powder-coated. These two protections determine moisture resistance, as the underlying material is usually aluminum, steel, or brass. Brushed surfaces show fingerprints and hard water stains less readily than polished ones, and in the bathroom, this becomes visible after just a week. Matte black, brushed gold, and polished chrome stand up well to daily wiping, with the latter requiring a cloth more often. Matte white looks unobtrusive against light-colored fixtures, but hard water stains appear sooner than on dark finishes. We've collected a full selection of one of these options separately as Chrome furniture handles.
Bathroom furniture handles and faucets and lamps in the bathroom
Start with what you already have on the wall. The faucet and lamp set the tone for the entire interior, so it's easiest to match the handle to them, not the color of the tiles. Chrome and satin finishes look harmonious with a chrome faucet, matte black with black fittings, and brass and brushed gold with a warm gold. This one rule is enough to ensure that metals in the bathroom don't clash. Modern bathroom furniture handles usually have a simple, rectangular line, and they set the tone for this section, although you'll also find retro and loft-style designs.
Bathroom Drawer Handles and Bathroom Cabinet Knobs
The drawer under the sink can be shallow, and a long handle won't fit. Short or edged bathroom drawer handles work better on such a front. Bathroom cabinet knobs are usually around 30 mm in diameter and require a single hole, so you can install them without measuring the spacing. Choose flat handles for bathroom cabinets where the cabinet door meets the door to the room, as typical hardware protrudes from the front by about three centimeters. When choosing handles for a bathroom cabinet and the adjacent pillar, stick to the same finish, even if the shapes are different.
How to measure spacing before replacing bathroom cabinet handles
Spacing is the distance between the centers of the screws, and it's the starting point for any replacement. Measure it on the old handle before ordering anything, because then you'll be hitting pre-drilled holes and not drilling the wet front a second time. The most common measurements are 128, 160, and 96 mm, then 320 and 192 mm, and for the longest fronts, the values go much higher. On the front of a washbasin cabinet without pre-drilled holes, the knob gives you free rein, as there's no spacing at all. A screwdriver is all you need for installation, and you can choose the right screw for the thickness of the front.
Frequently asked questions about bathroom cabinet handles
◆ What handles are best for the bathroom?
Those with a lacquered or powder-coated finish are best, as they don't have exposed metal that reacts with steam. Matte black and brushed finishes work well, and polished chrome works well if you don't mind frequent wiping. Match the shape to the width of the front, not the type of room.
◆ How to choose handles for cabinets?
Measure the screw spacing on the old handle and look for the same value, usually 128 or 160 mm. Then match the length to the width of the front: the wider the front, the longer the handle looks more natural. Finally, choose the color that best matches the faucet.
◆ What's the difference between bathroom and kitchen handles?
Bathroom handles are the same furniture fittings as those in the kitchen, only selected for moisture resistance. What matters is the coating and the resistance of the finish to water deposits. The core of the department is handles and knobs for furniture fronts, and in addition, there are wall hooks and handle pads.
◆ What is the spacing of bathroom furniture handles?
The most common are 128, 160, and 96 mm. 320 and 192 mm are also popular for wide vanity cabinet fronts, and for the longest ones, the spacing goes much higher. Some models are attached with a single screw and have no spacing at all.
◆ Handle or knob for a narrow drawer?
A knob usually wins on a narrow front because it requires a single hole and doesn't impose spacing. A handle provides a more secure grip on a heavy cosmetics drawer. Many people combine both solutions in one finish: knobs on drawers, longer handles on cabinets.
◆ Which finish shows the least water marks?
Brushed and matte. On a polished surface, every drop leaves a visible mark, especially in hard water. Matte black and brushed gold require less frequent wiping than mirror-polished chrome.
