Edge Handles: Bottom Grip, Smooth Front
The profile is screwed to the top or side edge of the door so that it protrudes beyond its outline. You slide your fingers under the edge, and there's nothing on the front to grab with your sleeve. It's also called an edge-mounted handle. All screws enter from the inside of the front, so they leave no trace on the door face.
Edge Handles for Kitchen Furniture
The lack of protruding elements makes it easier to wipe the fronts, and the wide profile provides support for your entire hand. For upper cabinets, you use a profile mounted from the bottom, and for drawers, the same shape rotated the other way. With handleless cabinets, one long profile runs along several adjacent fronts, creating a common line for the entire row of cabinets. Edge handles for kitchen cabinets also work well in laundry rooms and pantry cabinets.
Edge handle vertical or horizontal on the front
On cabinets and drawers, the profile usually runs horizontally, along the top edge. On tall cabinets and doors, it is placed vertically, near the opening edge, so you can reach it at any height. A vertical edge handle creates a more relaxed look on a narrow front where a horizontal strip would divide the door crosswise. Before choosing a setting, check which side the front opens on.
What are edge handles for furniture made of?
Most strips are made of aluminum: it's lightweight, doesn't rust, and allows for a long profile without adding excessive weight to the hinges. You're less likely to find steel, brass, or other metals. These are heavier and cooler to the touch. A brushed surface has a fine pattern in one direction and shows fingerprints less than a smooth varnish. Powder coating provides a scratch-resistant coating, and the most common colors are silver, white, black, then gold, gray, and brown.
Where else can edge handles be used?
Beyond the kitchen, profiles are also used in custom-made wardrobes, where a vertical strip runs the entire height of the door. In office spaces and children's rooms, it's helpful that there's no way to catch them with a sleeve or backpack strap. Do you prefer a handle that protrudes from the front and provides a full grip? A separate category are oblong furniture handles. We have collected a wider selection of matte black in the category black furniture handles, and solid wood fronts are more often combined with wood, i.e. with the category wooden furniture handles.
What spacing of edge handles should I measure before replacing?
Spacing is the distance between the centers of the holes in the profile, measured from axis to axis, never from the end of the strip. The most common values are 20, 160, 80, 128, and 64 mm, and when replacing, you'll want to look for exactly the same number; then you won't have to re-drill the front. Also check the second dimension, which is easy to forget: how much the profile protrudes beyond the door plane, because in a tight space, this determines whether the adjacent fronts will open fully. Edge handles are screwed onto the inside of the door, so all you need for installation is a drill and a screwdriver.
Frequently asked questions about edge handles
◆ What is an edge handle?
This is a profile mounted on the edge of the front, not on its surface. You grab it from the bottom or side, leaving the door smooth.
◆ Are edge handles comfortable?
You grip them with your entire hand instead of two fingers, which gives you a firm grip even with a wet hand. That's why they're so often used in kitchens. With very narrow profiles, you need to aim your fingers more precisely.
◆ How to install edge handles?
Measure the spacing, mark the hole centerlines on the inside of the front, then drill and tighten the screws. The profile is supposed to extend beyond the edge of the door, so before drilling, hold it up and check that it doesn't interfere with the adjacent cabinet. A drill and screwdriver will suffice.
◆ Can the edge handle be mounted vertically?
Yes. On cabinet doors and tall posts, it should be placed vertically, at the opening edge. Just make sure the holes will fall in a space free from hinges and guides.
◆ How do I choose the length of a cabinet edge handle?
When replacing, the spacing is crucial, as the holes in the front are already there. For new construction, consider the width of the front and whether the profile should be shorter than the door or run through several adjacent cabinets. The longest strips reach three meters.
◆ Which kitchen handles should you choose: edge or long handle?
The edge profile doesn't protrude from the front, making it easier to wipe the cabinets and eliminating the need to catch your sleeve on them. The long handle provides a more secure grip on heavy drawers. In a single kitchen, both are often used: edged on the upper fronts, and elongated on the lower ones.
