Furniture handles - care & maintenance

Furniture handles - care & maintenance

Holders, hangers, hooks, toilet paper holders, candlesticks and other decorative elements can stay with us for very long years and enjoy splendor. However, the products we sell are made of precious materials, often natural, sometimes raw - not protected by any varnish. Hence, their surface may not be resistant to dirt, may patinate or oxidize. Below are ways to care and refresh our products.

How to care for brass handles?

How to care for copper handles?

Brass is an alloy containing copper. Both of these materials are metals that have different chemical properties but have a lot in common. For example, that unpainted ones begin to oxidize and patinate with time. They take on a characteristic green bloom. Although brass tolerates contact with water well, it does not like acid environment, so the touch of our hands, citric acid or corrosive cleaning agents can damage it very much.

To keep metal furniture handles in good condition, we must be careful of mechanical damage!

Varnished and raw metal handles require care. Gentle cleaning agents dedicated to metals do it best. In our store we offer PUTS.

PUTS is a gentle natural cleaner created by our Swedish friends, lovers of metals and beautiful additives, for universal use. Suitable for cleaning various surfaces, recommended for metals such as: polished and brushed brass, copper, chrome or stainless steel. It can also handle other materials well, but we recommend testing in an invisible place.

How to use PUTS:

  1. Put on gloves to protect hands and nails. Also protect adjacent surfaces (e.g. countertops) to avoid discoloration.
  2. Remove all dirt from the product surface, for example with a dry pre-wipe.
  3. Shake the bottle well and apply a few drops to a damp sponge or cloth. Note: The material should be soft. Do not clean the handles with rough "scourers" or very "shaggy" materials.
  4. Wipe the product a few times in a circular motion.
  5. Rinse the sponge or cloth thoroughly with water.
  6. Wipe the item once more by thoroughly washing the liquid.
  7. Wipe the cleaned surface dry with the rest of the agent and water.

How to care for chrome and stainless steel furniture handles?

Unlike copper or brass, chrome and stainless steel will not oxidize, so they will not patinate. However, they are sensitive to mechanical damage, so please do not use hard and scouring materials to clean them.

We recommend our PUTS agent for care. Of course, you can use other pastes, creams and milks dedicated to metals. An important rule is not to treat brushed products with polished products, as they may start to shine.

How to care for varnished furniture handles?

Lacquered handles, i.e. steel, aluminum or other, coated with a layer of colored varnish or powder coated, for example white, black, but also gold, silver, copper , require less attention on our part. The same can be cleaned with PUTS or ordinary water with washing-up liquid.

How to care for leather products?

Handles, hangers and other products made of leather are long-lived and can stay with us for years, but from time to time they require renovation and maintenance.

  • Leather products should be protected against high temperature, strong sunlight and wetting. (sunlight can cause discoloration)
  • The skin is not resistant to sweat, which can cause discoloration on the product.
  • Remember about the susceptibility of natural leather products to all kinds of dirt, grease, impossible or very difficult to remove.
  • Do not use aggressive cleaning agents for cleaning, but only special agents for the care of leather and materials.
  • Hot, dry air can dry out the skin if it is not properly impregnated.
  • Take special care with brown and natural leather, which tends to darken when in contact with water.
  • Use a damp and squeezed cloth when cleaning.
  • After the product has dried, it is important for the skin to dry well before applying any impregnation pastes or creams.
  • Impregnates there are a whole lot, if you need help, we recommend going to the equestrian shop or with exclusive accessories, where you will receive detailed help and appropriate materials.
